Study Questions for Call to the Soul

"I see CALL...as a special way of understanding what we are here for: being able to name our changing field of work in the world and to know when it is complete, when it is time for a new call to begin." (p.13)

How do you think about the word "call" or "calling"?
Do you know someone who works with a sense of call?
How do you recognize a "called" person?

The Nature of Call (pages 17-33)

"The concept of call assumes we are spiritually linked with others and with creation, whether we like it or not." (19)

How do you get inspiration or guidance from a spiritual source?
How do others receive guidance?
Do you have a regular practice of attending to spiritual guidance? What is it?
Do you pay attention to your dreams? How do you work with those images?
Do you believe that dreams come from God? What Bible stories of dreams do you know?
How does your body reveal spiritual truth? Can you describe a recent example?
What is the distinction between "spirit" and "soul" for you? For others?

"Change happens to us. Transition happens in us. Call is a transition process." (22)

What body cycles suggest transition to you?
What demographic group do you belong to? (Builders, Bridgers, Boomers or Busters)
How does that impact your search for spiritual guidance?
What spiritual questions are people in your age-group asking?

The Cycle of Call (pages 34-46)

"If we can learn to listen, we will hear a call, an invitation to meaning and purpose. We will discover a way to freedom that is both personal and systemic, part of the great liberation story for all of creation." (35)

What biblical stories of call can you think of?

Are there other heroic or mythic stories of call that you know?

What patterns do you already see in those stories?

In a story of your choice, where is the crossing point between inspiration and embodiment?

What difference does it make when the hero refuses to accept the challenge of call?

Is there a cry for help somewhere in your own life? Could it be a source of call?
