Marjory Zoet Bankson

Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa

May 20, 1999

A distinctive approach runs through your teaching, preaching, and writing. You use biblical stories to help people connect with important spiritual themes and discern paths for growth in their lives. You encourage those you touch to explore God's call, claim gifts, and connect in Christian community.

In 1985 you were selected president of Faith at Work, the first woman to hold this position. Faith at Work is an ecumenical national network of leaders and learners at the growing edge of the Church--committed to biblical faith, grounded in life experience, shared in small group fellowship, expressed by new models of ministry.

As president you conduct regional conferences, retreats, church renewal weekends, workshops on such topics as spirituality, call, soul making, community, ministry, and leadership. In addition, you are editor of Faith at Work, a quarterly journal with a circulation of over 20,000. Your ministry focuses on empowering the people of God to discern their call and gifts and to deepen their faith in God. You are known as a Christian of lively faith, an imaginative teacher and storyteller, a deeply-rooted spiritual friend. You have a national reputation as a "builder" of the Church.

An honors graduate of Radcliffe College, you completed a Master's degree in history at the University of Alaska. You taught school and were the first women's counselor at Dartmouth College before becoming a full-time potter in 1970. Besides taking classes at this Seminary, you also became a regular presenter in various programs at our Center for Continuing Education.

You are a core member of the Seekers Church, one of the worshiping communities which has grown out of the Church of the Saviour in Washington, D.C. You serve as a leader in their School of Christian Living.

The Virginia Theological Seminary is honored to confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
