The Scattered Church 1999 Issue #4

Cover Guy: Bruce MacDougall

In the September issue of the Canadian magazine, Marketplace, former Faith At Work President, Bruce MacDougall, was featured on the cover as an example of active aging. At 74, he plays tennis regularly and, in the winter, works out at the gym and skates to keep himself fit. Since he retired from FAW in 1985, he has become an author, photographer, songwriter and bandleader.

Bruce's most recent and favorite book is for children, The Adventures of Albert O'Saurus, for which his nine grandchildren, aged two to 11, drew all the illustrations. His photos of local scenes have been made into cards and placemats and his musical skills touch others at local retirement homes. An accomplished pianist, Bruce and eight other musicians formed a band and he has been writing songs for their performances in addition to his other interests.

Bruce is the author of Hurrah For the Process, Rejoice in the Lord, and A Time to Travel Light. He and his wife Isobel have five children and nine grandchildren. They live in Southampton, Ontario, where they are both very much involved in community affairs.

Roger and Ruth Fredrikson Honored in Sioux Falls, S.D.

After a lifetime of ministry, Roger and Ruth Fredrikson have been honored by the University of Sioux Falls. President Mark Benedetto announced plans for a $1.5 million renovation of 70-year-old Glidden Hall in order to establish the Roger and Ruth Fredrikson School of Education and Center for Christian Thought.

Many in the Faith At Work network remember Roger's book about the relational "revolution" in his Sioux Falls church from his book, The Church That Refused to Die. He pastored the First Baptist Church of Ottawa KS from 1954 to 1959, served as pastor of First Baptist in Sioux Falls from 1959 to 1975 and First Baptist of Wichita KS from 1975 to 1987. Since then, he and Ruth have been conducting Renewal Conferences using the Faith At Work model of building intentional community throughout the country.

Governor William J. Janklow said When Roger and Ruth see a problem, they never lament about who is responsible. Instead, they actively become involve and gently work to find the best solution....By their own example, this couple has taught thousands about serving one's community and God.

If you with to join the effort to make the Center happen, please send your contribution honoring Roger and Ruth Fredrikson to The University of Sioux Falls Development Office, 1101 West 22nd St, Sioux Falls SC 57105-1699.

Ada Smith Giving the Gift of Music

Ada faithfully serves the Lord through Maine Faith At Work. She recently led the effort to purchase a piano for the St Paul's Center in Augusta, Maine where many FAW conferences have been held over the years. The piano was dedicated at the 1999 Maine Faith At Work Conference to the memory of Irma & Lee Whiston, the "god-parents" of FAW Maine.

Thank you Ada, from all the people who will be lifted up on wings of song as a result of your efforts.

Carla Woodard - Remembered for her gift of Herself

On Saturday October 16, 1999, returning home after attending the Nebraska F@W Retreat, Carla was killed in a three-car crash.

I'm so grateful Carla was at the retreat and then saw Chris (in the nursing home) -- as if she was having closure. I never knew anyone who maintained such a grateful and loving heart in spite of incredible difficult and endless circumstances. I remember the Butterfly song she loved -- well, she's flying now. --- Pat Minard
