Edging down the crowded aisles
and into a booth
on one bum leg
(the other lost
two months ago to sugar)
is no picnic
but here she is
a.m.a.
drizzling maple syrup on hotcakes
as an old boyfriend sidles up
starts talking sweet
and asks her for her number.
Ain't
got no phone, baby
she lies, smiling
shrugging him off
reluctantly.
She knows too much sugar
poured on all at once
can be risky for someone like her---
hungry
and out of control.
