Reaching over the smooth lip of a vase,
a calla lily leans across the table ---
my confidant, my breakfast companion.
Its petals curve like two halves of a heart,
spreading out and then folding back in,
the overlap --- the color of
bamboo.
And I think of you growing inside me,
in the overlap of our soft bellies
where our two souls dance, separate yet one.
I know now you are both real and fleeting,
and we are together like this only in passing
until God calls you into the world
a new voice
a new movement
a new face to love.
