Linnea and Dan Nilsen Capshaw had many
reasons to sell their townhouse in Arlington
VA. They were not uncommon reasons: home
prices seemed artificially high, Dan’s work had recently offered the opportunity
to telecommute, and they wanted to move closer to family, especially two young
nephews. They went through the usual hassles of fixing up the place, and after
the For Sale sign went up, their townhouse sold in two days (prior to the open
house!).
A few weeks later, Faith At Work received a nice donation. I wanted to find out more about their gift, so I asked them about it.
Linnea: Some of what we have is from hard work. But some of our blessings have nothing to do with us. There was nothing we did to make the value of our house go up. Why not share it with some of the organizations we believe in?
Dan: I guess we feel some responsibility to humanity in general. It is a part of being a citizen of the earth.
Doug: Who did you give to?
Dan: We gave a gift to a Haitian organization. My sister has adopted two children from there, so we feel a special bond with that country. Jesuit Relief Service for Tsunami relief, and Sojourners too.
Doug: Let’s not forget Faith At Work. Why us?
Dan: I am particularly bothered by the hypocrisy of people who go to worship on Sunday and feel that somehow that is what it means to believe in God. So I want to support and encourage any organization that helps people figure out what it means to live their faith in their whole life.
Linnea: F@W has one of the most powerful and hopeful messages today: God desires for each of us to live as called people of faith in ALL areas of our lives, for the good of the World…and F@W supports individuals, churches and other faith communities in living out this call. How could we not share our blessing with F@W?
