I was called to create from an early age. As a child I’m
sure it was a way of drawing attention to myself. Later it was a means of
expressing my political beliefs and then as a response to exploring dreams,
following intuition and responding to life in general. When I paint, I’m
expressing my love of color, texture and form. Recently in my art, I’m looking
at the beauty and wonder I witness in nature.
However all of my art requires paying attention – looking intently – developing sensitivity and empathy to others. Being prepared, with sketchbook in hand – expecting the next image. Being disciplined – going in the studio regularly. I’ve worked at not being isolated by volunteering at the National Institutes of Health creating art with very sick children. I’ve been a Stephen’s Minister and involved with Called to Care programs at my church. I’ve worked with Social Concerns and Mission groups; the United Farm Workers and the Civil Rights Movement. Art does not happen in isolation.
I feel a need to honor my gift and constantly review how I’m using that gift. I’m privileged to be able to devote my time to being part of a creative pursuit and not a destructive one, especially during a time of war.
